Which type of driveway is best: Block Paving or Resin-Bound?
It depends on your personal aesthetic and budget. Block paving is timeless, highly versatile, and allows for individual blocks to be lifted and replaced if access underneath is ever required for utilities. Resin-bound driveways offer a smooth, seamless, contemporary finish that is fully permeable and extremely low maintenance. We can walk you through samples to help you choose the ideal option.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
You won't need planning permission if the new or replacement driveway uses a permeable surface (such as resin-bound, gravel, or porous block paving) that allows rainwater to drain through naturally. If non-permeable materials are used for an area over 5 square metres, planning permission is required unless the surface is laid to direct water runoff into a lawn or soakaway within your property boundary.
How thick does the base of a driveway need to be?
A long-lasting driveway relies on proper ground preparation. We typically excavate down to accommodate a solid, compacted Type 1 MOT sub-base of around 150mm, followed by a sharp sand laying course and the top paving layer. This deep foundation prevents cracking, dipping, and rutting under car tyres.
How long before I can park my car on a new driveway?
For standard block paving, you can typically park your car on it as soon as the final jointing sand is swept and compacted into place. For resin-bound driveways, we generally recommend leaving it for 24 to 48 hours for the resin matrix to fully cure before driving heavy vehicles onto the surface.
